Scratching The Surface

In my college years I had two room mates, and great friends who were always running around creating madness and art.  One of them was a drummer in a band called Kut U Up and an amazing artist who spent most of his time creating brilliant paintings crafted between the mediums of paint pens, spray paint, and oils.  Oh ya, he was also responsible for creating the original Macbeth shoe line.  His band was the typical twenties rocking fun times group full of even more characters who were invited to tour one summer with Blink 182 as their opening act.  For a group of 23 year old’s this was a huge deal and a possible break into stardom.  My other room mate Matt at the ripe old age of 20 was on his way to becoming a brilliant cinematographer / editor and decided that he was going to travel along with the tour and make a documentary film about their experience called Riding in Vans With Boys.  The name was inspired because these guys (all 6 of them) piled into a van and made their way across the country for an entire summer.  I’m not just talking about driving in the van, they actually slept and ate and lived in the van!!  I know, sounds disgusting right???  Well it was, and if you want to see how ridiculous it was find the movie on line and watch it for yourselves.

The point to my story is that both of these guys have now moved on and created lives for themselves using the skills they were honing in our twenties.  Matt Beauchesne is now co-owner along with world champion professional surfers Andy and Bruce Irons, of Irons Brothers Productions Which now is creating some of the surf industries leading films.  Brendan Rausch is the lead designer at a creative agency called Vivid Minds who have been producing amazing collateral and design for countless companies across the U.S

Matt called me the other night and asked if I would be interested in doing a studio shoot for the branding and add campaign for their new movie.  I of course said of course!!  And off we went into a whirl wind of ideas and brain storming and numerous trips to home depot all to create an incredible add campaign that I’m not at liberty to discuss just yet.  I will say this though, it involved 12 gallons of paint a studio, and a very patient young budding professional surfer by the name of Julian Wilson.  Julian is a 20 year old phenom from the Sunshine Coast of Australia who has talent and promise beyond his years.  He also happens to be an incredibly bright and caring young man who has modeled his career around his mothers bouts with breast cancer auctioning off surf boards and other surfing paraphernalia for thousands of dollars to be donated to breast cancer foundations.  His lead sponsor Quicksilver has branded him around the drawings his Mum adorne’s each and every one of his surfboards with, and have created his own signature board shorts to match her art.  So needless to say the film will be doing the same.

Here’s a sneak peak at a few of the behind the scenes shots from the studio photo / video shoot.
