Mabuno Continued

I shot another piece of the Mabuno project yesterday with Ryan Maher at the quaint residence of Mr. Jordan Percey and his Mrs. the tallented Jackie.  (Sorry I don’t know your last name Jackie….).  They live in a really cool old 1930’s building here in Encinitas and have crafted every square inch of the place into an eclectic mix of serious style and design.  Here’s a few sneak peeks of some of the detail.  The rest of the architectural shots will be done soon.

I got to bring my assistant along on this one.

Classic Brides

One of my previous engagement shoots with the lovely Kim and Eric was posted last week at the Classic Bride’s home of inspiration for all things wedding and design.  Take a look at Miss Sarah’s blog for awesome inspiration, ideas, help, and design here and you can see the post.  My wife and I have the classic bride in our readers and are stalking her post’s all the time, so it was absolutely an honor to be featured.  Thanks Sarah!!

Scratching The Surface Campaign 2

I got to team up with my good friends Matt Beauchesne and Brendan Raasch last weekend to shoot the second ad campaign for Julian Wilson’s upcoming film “Scratching The Surface”.  We shot everything underwater and had an absolute blast doing so.  I have sooooo many new ideas now for shoots I would like to do while submerged.  More to come on that in the near future.  We didn’t have a huge budget to work with on this, just a cool idea and the help of friends.  So I learned really quickly that having scuba gear and oxygen would make life a whole lot easier in the future.  But I did really improve my breath holding stamina under water, so that’s a plus.  Special thanks to Brendan’s parents for allowing us to use their pool.  Also huge thank you’s to Bart Wilson for collecting all the guys boards and helping out all day.  And another giant thank you to my friend Rich Clark for coming along to help out and give me great ideas as we went along.  Such a fun day, I can’t wait for campaign #3!!  Also if you’re interested in shooting anything underwater.  I rented the camera housing and appropriate gear through the fine people at Borrow Lenses.  They’ve linked up with Aquatech to offer housings to the world which is an awesome outlet to have available.  Aquatech was super helpful and had all the tips and tricks I needed to accomplish the shoot.  Thanks guys!

Kristen & Joe Get Married + Sneak Peek

This is a sneak peek from the wedding Taryn and I shot last weekend in San Diego.  Kristen and Joe booked me about a year and a half before their wedding date which isn’t that unusual, but what was unusual was how much fun I’ve had with them since the day we booked.  The first image you’ll see below of Kristen is a perfect representation of her.  Bubbling over with smiles, enthusiasm, and character.  We just so happen to share a mutual friend named Jericho, who is nothing short of hilarious herself, so when it came time to book their engagement low and behold Jericho was our fourth partner in crime and I think we all ended up having more fun drinking beer and laughing at one another than we did shooting actual photographs. Since that day last summer every time Kristen and Joe came to town for wedding planning and fun with Jericho I was graciously invited along for the madness and more good times were had.

So when it came down to the day of needless to say I felt an overwhelming personal touch on this one.  I’m always trying to tune into what my Brides and Grooms are feeling and thinking to capture it all, and sometimes you can’t help but get caught up in the day yourself to live a bit of the emotion and magic that’s floating around the air.  I think that’s why I enjoy shooting weddings so much.  You really get to first hand be a part of someones special day, and it can be very rewarding to hand them over those emotions a few weeks later when they see the photos for the first time.

Jackie & Steve – Wedding San Marcos, CA

Here’s a little slide show of our favorite images from Jackie & Steve’s wedding at The Old School House in San Marcos.

Balboa Park – San Diego, CA

I’ve been photographing scenic images all over San Diego for the past few months with my friend Rich.  We were hired by a travel website company to help launch their new site with a bang and San Diego happened to be their first destination.  It’s been a fun process going around to my neighboring cities searching for unique angles that showcase the beauty and history of San Diego.  It has also been extremely challenging with the weather over the past few months, but all in all I’m having a great time re-exploring the city I’ve called home for 13 years now.  It’s kind of strange what you’ll realize you’ve been missing right under your nose when you take the time to look for it.  I had no idea of some of the most amazing places even existed within San Diego’s city limits.  These images are part of the Balboa Park project.

Skyler & Kristen Engagement Encinitas, CA

My good friends Skyler and Kristen recently were engaged and plan to be married next summer here in San Diego.  Which I kind of feel like some times creates an awkward situation.  Do you ask your friend to shoot your wedding vs. being involved as just a friend to celebrate.  Do you not even like your friends photography and don’t want them to find out the hard way?  Do you not want to get involved on a business level at such a monumental event?  Lot’s of questions to be asked when pondering that type of thing.  The honest truth is that I’m relieved to say I won’t be shooting Skyler and Kristen’s wedding.  Kimberly and I plan on drinking lots of champagne, and tearing up the dance floor with the rest of our closest friends on that day.  Luckily for me they both felt that having us as guests to share their big day was the right thing to do.  Oh, and Skyler absolutely hates my photography too……..awkward

I did however offer to shoot their engagement photographs at no charge as kind of a congratulations I love you guys gift to get them going on their marry way.  We’ve been waiting and waiting for a little sun shine in dreary San Diego for it seems like months now and finally decided to pull the trigger and go for it last week.  Lucky for me they were in on all of my crazy ideas of shooting a super vintage 1800’s inspired session as well as some fun shots at the Del Mar fairgrounds.  Congrats again on your engagement Skyler and Kristen, Kim and I love you guys and your little monster Zoey.  Looking forward to the big party next weekend!!

Sneak Peek Beth & Ralph’s Wedding + La Jolla, California

Taryn and I photographed another beautiful wedding this weekend before winter headed back into Southern California in July……..Random.  Beth and Ralph live and love in beautiful Colorado but Beth’s family resides here in San Diego.  So when we first met to discuss their wedding it was all about fun creative ways to capture the beautiful backdrops and gorgeous ocean scenery of La Jolla.  The event was to take place at the newly renovated and absolutely stunning Scripp’s Seaside Forum positioned on the cliff above the La Jolla Shores.  Anyone living in Southern California knows it has been nothing short of a gray summer.  May gray followed by June gloom, and now into a severely depressed July graaaaay.  So as a photographer hoping to get beautiful sunset glittering ocean scenes this Saturday I was really thinking I needed a new game plan.  Then out of nowhere Beth and Ralph’s luck changed the game and the entire summer when the sun peaked out and stayed out well into the evening.  Thank you Mother Earth and the powers that be.  Saturday, July 3rd was a beautiful day and wrapped its self around a beautiful wedding.  Here’s a little sneak peek of the action……..

The Most Amazing Furniture On Earth

I was recently hired by a company called Mabuno Fine Furnishings to photograph an interior architecture / design project.  Mabuno’s basic concept is to take really old woods, materials and all things really interesting that they find in 100+ year old barns and plains in the middle of the America’s and turn it all into furniture.  Ryan Maher is the chief creator behind the company.  His background from what I can gather is basically routed in art, creation, and ultimately creativity.  We’ve only had the opportunity to hang out and get to know one another on a few occasions, but I’m really excited to see this project come together and to get a first hand look into what goes into his work.  Ryan, myself, and another good friend Jordan who’s heading up the creative side of the project all went out for a brief scout this past weekend to look over each location and gather ideas for the shoots.  We ended the day at the Mabuno mad scientist facility here in Leucadia, CA which was a photographers dream come true.  There’s dust, and crazy old woods and opportunities just popping out of every corner of this place.  Can’t wait to shoot the actual mapped out photographs in the facility over the next few weeks!

Here’s a sneak peek for now.

FRUIT- NOT FAT!! The Fat Swap

I have a good friend and extremely hard working business owner that is doing something really cool in the health food world starting tomorrow!  He owns a granola company called Galaxy Granola.  Bare with me here because i know there are a million other granola’s out there to choose from.  Bear Naked, McCabes, Henrey’s Brand, Organics Granola, and on and on………. BUT, did you also know that every one of those other granola companies cook that granola in canola some other type of oil in order to give it the texture and taste you’re looking for.  This means that if you were to eat a small bowl of that granola you’d be consuming somewhere in the ballpark of 14 – 21 grams of FAT!!  That’s more than a McDonald’s Cheese Burger!!

Galaxy Granola however, bakes their products (all of their products) in apple sauce instead.  Giving you the same great flavor and texture with less than 4 grams of fat in that same sized bowl of granola.

So, this is the basic idea for the Fat Swap event beginning tomorrow.  Galaxy has teamed up with Whole Foods, Revolution Foods, Organic Sunshine Burgers, The Fruit Guys, and Pop Chips in an attempt to trade 10,000 pounds of fatty foods for 10,000 pounds of fruit substitutes for that kind of fatty food.  What they’re asking people to do is go to their kitchen, find something with way too much fat in it, grab that fatty food or container and send it to them.  They will in turn package something of equal weight that substitutes that fat with fruit and send it right back to you.  Hence the swap.  Pretty cool huh??  Check out this link with more info here if you like the idea.  http://www.fruitnotfat.com/fatswap/

FORD Modeling Agency Test Run

I had the opportunity to do a test shoot with our friend David from FORD Modeling Agency in L.A. Some of you may recognize him from the shoot Rich and I did with Barry’s Boot Camp. Anyways, when he emailed and said his agent needed him to do a “Banana Republic” styled test shoot for his portfolio, I jumped at the chance to do something creative and fun while at the same time getting in the good graces of one of the largest modeling agencies in L.A. Even cooler the shoot was going to take place at a friends amazing home in the Hollywood hills. So, I enlisted the help of my friend Rich of 927 photography and we went to town on making David look handsome and Banana worthy……not to difficult eh.

Kim & Eric’s Engagement + Vintage Drive In

When Taryn and I met with Kim & Eric for the first time in our satellite office aka Starbucks, I knew right away they were going to be awesome to photograph.  They’re both full of smiles, enthusiasm, and good times.  Oh ya and it helps that they both look like movie stars.  So after convincing them that we were the perfect fit to tell their love story via imagery, we set off on a journey to plan the perfect engagement shoot.  If you read the sneak peak on these two they will be getting married on New Years Eve this coming winter in downtown San Diego.  The venue is at the amazing studio of the Botanica Modern Floral Design team, where all brides should look for all their floral ideas and inspiration.

So, Kim came up with the idea to do the NYE after party dress attire paired with some funky scenes and an old vintage couch.  (Awesome!)  Then Taryn and I figured that since we had such an amazing rain fall winter leading into a gorgeous full bloom spring that we should take advantage of the wildflowers as well as some of the local out of the ordinary scenes.  Somewhere along the way the concept was derived for the drive in shoot as well as the flower hills and magic happened.  We had such a great time shooting with Kim and Eric, and the images turned out better than I had hoped.  Thanks Kim & Eric, you guys are awesome.  I can’t wait to shoot your wedding!

Randomly enough Kim say’s her friend picked up the necklace at the Banana Republic outlet for a Hollywood Glam Party……

Padre’s??

It’s officially summer ladies and gentlemen due to the Memorial day celebration, great weather, and baseball season.  I’m not a huge sports fan by any means, but I do kind of get excited to hear Tony Gwen’s voice on the radio broadcasting a game.  For some reason it just solidifies the summer feelings for me.  Pads games also give Kim and I a great excuse to jump on the train for a trip downtown to see a game and enjoy a night out.  Who knows maybe tomorrow night??………

Here she is in all her glory.  Petco Park, one of the coolest stadiums in baseball.  Kim and I shared a night on the deck overlooking the game a few weeks ago with Rich and Shelby of 927 Photography.  We of course had to be nerds and bring our camera’s along.  What can you do?

Mom - Wonderfully colorful shot, and so perfectly framed. You are very creative.

Arizona

I just got back from a little trip to Arizona with the infamous Mr. Kerry Flowers of Genre Hotels.  We had a great time for two days in the desert discussing Social Media, SEO, and the rapidly expanding world of Boutique Hotels.  It was my first trip to Arizona ever, so that was pretty cool as well.  And since I have nothing photographically to show for my stay just yet I thought I’d post a few scenics I took while I was in Napa a few weeks back.  Happy hump day.

Escalate Live

I’ve had the most ridiculous past three weeks full of photo shoots of all different genre’s in several cities, meetings of all kinds, and a pile of retouching so high that I felt like I would never find my way out from under it.  So when I realized that Escalate Live 2010 was this Monday and Tuesday instead of being really excited, I was really stressed out.  How am I going to get the 5,000 images that need to be retouched done?  How am I going to get to blog posts?  How am I going to organize what I didn’t while I was on the road last week?  How am I going to sleep????!!

Well I still don’t know the answers to any of the questions above, but what I do know is that it was SO WORTH IT!!  The general vibe and energy of everyone who took the stage over the past two days was nothing short of shocking!  There are some amazing people in our industry who not only are incredibly talented with a camera, but are also tirelessly looking at how to improve our industry and our quality of life.  If you are a photographer and didn’t go, do yourself a favor and buy the live video feed.  So many awesome pointers and great outlooks on how to run your business.

Special thanks from me and Taryn to all of the big hitters of our world who took the time to stop and chat with us about anything we blurted out.  It was pretty awesome talking to these guys about how they’re doing what they’re doing so well.  And double special thanks to Dane Sanders for making it all possible.  Here’s a few iPhone photos from the day.  (Ya I know, I stocked Jasmine Star and JD and even got my photo taken with them – such a dork!  I still think she’s the cats pajamas though……ha!)
